About
Germana Barone is a Professor in Crystallography, Applied Mineralogy and Petrography at the University of Catania. Her PhD addressed The Petrology of Magmatic Associations. Her research concerns the characterization of natural and artificial stone materials as well as chemical and biological processes of decay. This has involved trialing new applications of minero-petrographic and geochemical analysis of rocks and artificial stone materials, as well as undertaking the petro-archaeometric and chemical characterization of the ceramic and raw materials used in ancient Sicily and southern Italy. She has been funded by the European Commission’s Research Project of National Interest programmes (PRIN) to undertake research on the petro-archaeometrics of ancient ceramic production in southern Italy and Sicily and to research innovative non-destructive and micro-destructive methods in the analysis of pottery of historical-archaeological interest by systematic comparison with traditional methods. She is contributing expertise in petrography, minerology, geochemistry and the geology of the Mediterranean, and will advise the PDRAs in Work Package 3 on sampling techniques and on processing the results.
